How Much Does a Brick Weigh?
Weight per brick, per wall square foot, and per cubic yard
A standard clay brick weighs about 4.5 pounds. Lay those bricks into a single-wythe wall and you're carrying roughly 40 pounds per square foot. Break that wall up for the dumpster and the rubble packs to about 3,000 pounds per cubic yard. Those numbers are why a brick tear-out is a weight problem, not a volume one.

Brick wall weight by assembly
Most brick you'll ever demo is part of a wall, and wall weight tracks with thickness. A single-wythe wall is one brick thick, the 4-inch veneer on a house front or a low garden wall. A double-wythe wall stacks two layers into solid 8-inch masonry, common on older load-bearing walls and chimneys. Add mortar, and a running-bond brick wall lands near these figures per square foot of face.

A 10 by 8 foot section of solid double-wythe brick is already past 3 tons. That's the whole reason brick jobs get sized by weight: the wall doesn't have to be large to bury a standard dumpster's limit.
What a single brick weighs
Brick isn't one size. The common modular and standard units sit near 4 to 5 pounds; oversize bricks made to lay faster carry more clay and weigh more. Fired-clay brick has a density of roughly 130 pounds per cubic foot, so a unit's weight follows its volume.

A running-bond wall uses about 6.9 modular bricks per square foot of face. Multiply that by roughly 4.2 pounds a brick and add the mortar, and you land back at the 40 pounds per square foot in the wall table.
What this means when you rent a dumpster
Broken brick doesn't stack tight. Once you knock a wall apart, the rubble packs to about 2,500 to 3,000 pounds per cubic yard in a container, down from the 3,500 of solid brick because of the air gaps between chunks. That's still close to a ton and a half per yard.
Run that against a real container. A 20-yard dumpster often carries a 3-ton cap. At roughly 1.5 tons per cubic yard of rubble, you hit that limit with about 4 cubic yards loaded, and the remaining 16 yards of space sit empty. Overload it anyway and you pay overage, usually 50 to 100 dollars per ton on top of the rental.
We recommend the smaller container here, not the bigger one. For a brick-only tear-out, a 10-yard heavy-debris or Low-Boy box rated for 10 tons beats a 30-yard dumpster you can never legally fill. Space is never your problem with brick; the scale is. Keep the load clean brick with no mixed trash, and many yards will recycle it or take it at a lower masonry rate.
Don't size a dumpster off recycling-table numbers.
Government volume-to-weight tables lump brick into mixed inert debris well under 1,500 pounds per cubic yard. Those are administrative diversion factors for tonnage reporting, not the weight of real rubble. Brick loaded in a dumpster runs roughly twice that. Trust the low number and you'll blow past a weight cap and eat overage fees.
