How Much Does a Countertop Weigh?
Granite, quartz, and marble weight per square foot and per slab
A standard 3cm (1.25-inch) slab of granite, quartz, or marble weighs about 18 to 20 pounds per square foot. That puts an average kitchen's counters near 850 pounds and a single full slab at 800 to 1,200. Stone is dense, so it eats into a dumpster's weight limit faster than its small footprint suggests.

Countertop weight by material
Thickness drives the weight more than the stone type does. Granite, quartz, and marble all land within a pound or two of each other at the same thickness, because their densities are close, roughly 165 to 180 pounds per cubic foot. The choice that actually changes your number is 2cm versus 3cm.

Non-stone tops weigh far less, which is why they rarely factor into a weight calculation:
- Solid surface (Corian-type acrylic), about 6 to 9 lbs/ft² at a typical 1/2-inch build.
- Butcher block (hardwood), roughly 4 to 6 lbs/ft² at 1.5 inches thick.
- Laminate over a particleboard core, about 3 to 4 lbs/ft².
What a full kitchen's counters weigh
Multiply your counter area by the per-square-foot figure and you have the total. These are 3cm stone weights for the counter areas we see in typical kitchens.

A bathroom vanity top is a rounding error by comparison: 25 pounds for a 24-inch single vanity, up to about 60 for a 60-inch double. The kitchen is where stone weight adds up.
What this means when you rent a dumpster
Here's the part that trips people up. A whole kitchen's counters take up almost no room, under a cubic yard of dumpster space, yet they weigh close to half a ton. Volume tells you nothing useful with stone; weight is the only number that matters.
In a full kitchen gut, the stone counters, the tile flooring, and the mortar bed under that tile are the heavy debris. Cabinets, drywall, and trim are bulky but light. So the load can look half full and still be near its weight cap, because the dense material is sitting at the bottom doing all the damage. A standard 20-yard dumpster often carries a 3-ton limit; stone counters plus a tiled floor can use up a solid chunk of that before the cabinets even go in.
We recommend against sizing up the dumpster just for the countertop. One slab is under half a ton and won't overweight a 20-yarder by itself. Size the container for the whole debris mix, then watch the combination: stone plus tile is the pairing that pushes a mixed load over, not the counter on its own.
One more practical note on getting it out. A full granite counter is a two-person lift, and it cracks if you flex it across an unsupported span. Disconnect the sink and cooktop, cut the caulk or adhesive holding the slab to the cabinets, and lift straight up. Stone is weight, not volume. Don't size off how full it looks.
A 45-square-foot counter takes under a cubic yard of dumpster space but weighs about 850 pounds. Government recycling and volume-to-weight tables list stone and concrete far too light for real debris, so trusting those figures, or eyeballing how full the box looks, is how a kitchen gut with tile flooring blows past its weight cap. Count stone against the weight limit, load it low, and spread it out.
Don't dumpster a good slab
A whole countertop in decent shape isn't trash. Intact granite and quartz slabs get reused as kitchen islands, shop workbenches, outdoor tables, and fireplace hearths, and remnant yards or a Habitat for Humanity ReStore will often take one off your hands. We recommend pulling a good counter off carefully rather than smashing it into the dumpster; a slab worth a couple thousand dollars new is worth more as a giveaway than as landfill weight you pay by the ton to bury.
Stone that's cracked or has to come out in pieces still doesn't need a landfill. Most areas take clean broken granite, marble, and quartz at a concrete or aggregate recycler, under the same clean-load rules as concrete: stone only, no wood, no trash mixed in.
