A standard 4-by-8 concrete paver weighs about 5 pounds. Across a patio that adds up to roughly 25 pounds per square foot, so a 200-square-foot patio is about 2.5 tons of paver alone. Pavers are solid concrete, so a tear-out is a weight problem long before it's a space problem.

Thickness is what decides paver weight, and it's set by the job the paver is built for. Pedestrian patios use 2⅜-inch (60mm) pavers; driveways and anything that carries a car use 3⅛-inch (80mm). Since a paver is solid concrete top to bottom, every extra inch of thickness adds roughly 11 pounds per square foot.

A 400-square-foot driveway in 80mm pavers is over 6 tons of concrete. That's the number that sets your disposal plan, and it's why paver jobs get priced by weight, not by how big the patio looks.

What a single paver weighs

Per-piece weight tracks the paver's footprint and thickness. The small interlocking pavers you carry by the handful are a few pounds each; the big square slab pavers are a two-hand lift. Concrete paver density runs about 130 to 145 pounds per cubic foot, a touch lighter than poured structural concrete because of how the units are cast.

What this means when you rent a dumpster

Broken pavers pack like concrete rubble. Once you pull them up and they crack, the pile runs about 2,200 to 2,600 pounds per cubic yard in a container, down from the solid density because of air gaps between pieces. That's still well over a ton per cubic yard.

Match that to a real container. A 20-yard dumpster often carries a 3-ton cap. At roughly 1.2 tons per cubic yard of rubble, you hit that limit with about 2.5 cubic yards loaded, and the rest of the box is space you paid for and can't legally use. Go over and it's overage, usually 50 to 100 dollars per ton.

Here's the contrarian move, and it's the one that saves real money: pull the intact pavers aside before you rent anything. Unlike poured concrete, pavers come up whole and clean. They resell on marketplace listings, they relist through landscape yards, or you reuse them as base under a new patio. Only the cracked pieces, the bedding sand, and the base gravel need a dumpster, and that's usually a fraction of the pile.

For the debris that does go, we recommend a small heavy-debris or Low-Boy container rated for 10 tons over a big roll-off you'll never fill. With pavers, weight is the whole game; volume never is.

Government volume-to-weight tables fold pavers into mixed inert debris well under 1,500 pounds per cubic yard.
