How Much Does a Cinder Block Weigh?

A standard 8-inch cinder block, the common 8×8×16 unit, weighs about 38 pounds. Stack those into a wall and you're carrying roughly 42 pounds per square foot. Knock that wall apart for the dumpster and the rubble packs to about 2,400 pounds per cubic yard. A block tear-out is a weight problem long before it's a volume one.

What a single cinder block weighs

The block most people picture is the 8×8×16 hollow unit at about 38 pounds. Weight tracks with size and how much concrete the block actually holds. A 4-inch partition block is lighter; a 12-inch foundation block is heavier; a fully solid block skips the hollow cores and weighs nearly double a standard hollow one.

Density class matters too. Blocks come in lightweight, medium, and normal-weight grades depending on the aggregate. A lightweight 8-inch block can drop to 28 to 32 pounds; a normal-weight one sits near 38. Cinder block or concrete block?

People use the two names for the same thing, but they aren't identical. A true cinder block used coal cinders as aggregate, which made it lighter and softer. Almost nobody makes those anymore. What you buy today and what you're tearing out of most walls built since the 1960s is a concrete masonry unit (CMU): the same hollow shape, poured with sand-and-gravel concrete instead of cinders. It's heavier and stronger.

For disposal, the distinction is minor. Both are heavy inert masonry that a hauler weighs, not measures. If your wall is genuinely old and the block feels light and crumbly, shade the weights down a touch; if it's modern block, use the figures here as-is.

Block wall weight by assembly

Most block you'll demo is a wall: a garage, a foundation stem, a short retaining wall, or a shed base. Two things drive its weight per square foot, wall thickness and whether the cores are grouted. A hollow ungrouted wall is the light case. Fill the cores with grout, common on retaining and load-bearing walls, and the same wall more than doubles.

A 20-foot hollow garage wall is already 3.4 tons; grout the cores and it's over 7. A brick veneer built over a block backup adds the brick on top, landing near 85 pounds per square foot (see the brick weight guide for that build).

What this means when you rent a dumpster

Broken block doesn't stack tight. Once a wall comes apart, the rubble packs to about 2,000 to 2,400 pounds per cubic yard in a container. That's lighter than brick, which runs near 3,000, because the hollow cores leave air pockets when the pieces settle. Grouted block loses that advantage and lands closer to broken concrete.

Run it against a real container. A 20-yard dumpster often carries a 3-ton weight cap. At roughly 1.2 tons per cubic yard of block rubble, you hit that limit with about 5 cubic yards loaded, and the other 15 yards of space sit empty. Overload it and you pay overage, usually 50 to 100 dollars per ton on top of the rental.

We recommend the smaller container, not the bigger one. For a block-only tear-out, a 10-yard heavy-debris or Low-Boy box rated for 10 tons beats a 30-yard dumpster you can never legally fill. Space is never your problem with masonry; the scale is. And keep the load clean block, no wood or drywall from the rest of the job, since many yards will recycle clean masonry or take it at a lower rate than mixed debris.

Here's the contrarian call: for a small job, skip the dumpster. A short garden or retaining wall of hollow, ungrouted block, say 40 to 60 units, is a couple of pickup loads at 38 pounds each. Carrying it out by hand to a truck and running it to a transfer station often costs less than a heavy-debris rental. Save the container for grouted walls, big footings, or anything you can't lift twice.

One safety note that has nothing to do with weight: breaking or cutting block throws respirable silica dust. Wet the wall down with a hose as you work, wear a P100 respirator (not a paper mask), and don't dry-cut indoors.

Don't size a dumpster off recycling-table numbers.

Government volume-to-weight tables lump block and concrete into mixed inert debris near 1,400 pounds per cubic yard. Those are administrative diversion factors for tonnage reporting, not the weight of real rubble. Broken block loaded in a dumpster runs closer to 2,400. Trust the low number and you'll blow past a weight cap and eat overage fees.
